Spirituality and Its Relationship to Health


Spirituality involves a search for meaning, purpose and truth in life. It can be about connecting with nature and the universe, as well as oneself. It can also involve beliefs in a higher power, a value system or God. It can also involve feelings of hope, love and connection, inner peace and comfort, support and community. It can include a spiritual practice, such as meditation or prayer.

It is often viewed as separate from religion. While some may express their spirituality within a religious context, others may not. Some researchers prefer to use broader definitions of spirituality that may encompass some aspects of religion, but also provide a more clear distinction from religiosity and non-religious worldviews.

Can you be both religious and spiritual?

Many people confuse religion and spirituality. While there are some religious groups that are spiritual, most religions do not consider themselves to be spiritual in nature. Spirituality can be a way of finding comfort and peace during times of change or uncertainty in life. It can help us to see that there is more to our lives than just the concrete chaos of chemicals and gravitational forces that make up our bodies, minds and emotions.
