Writing About Social Issues

issues

An issue is a problem that affects many people in society. These problems can reflect current events or be long-standing concerns. They can be controversial and require active participation to resolve.

The most common issues include racial discrimination, the economic gap between men and women, and the effects of climate change on the world’s poorest people. These social problems can have a negative impact on a person’s life. They can cause mental health problems, poverty, or even a lack of opportunities in life.

For example, a person with a mental illness might struggle to find a job or find it difficult to maintain a healthy relationship. Similarly, a person who is homeless might face numerous challenges including being exposed to violence and a lack of resources. This could lead to further health issues such as a lack of sleep, which can impact your overall wellbeing.

When deciding on which issues to write about, you should look at what pushes your readers’ buttons. Once you’ve identified the issue, start to collect articles, facts, statistics, and names of key players. Eventually, you should be able to create a one-sentence opinion about the issue. This will serve as the basis for your article. For example, if you’re writing an article about the state of homelessness in America, you might want to write that “homelessness is a serious problem in this country because it prevents people from getting work and housing.” This will be a well-rounded and balanced opinion about the topic.
